Back to Part 1!
Great Sand Dunes National Park, home of the largest sand dunes in North America. On the full-sized version (click to embiggen) (warning - large) you can see the ant-like dots of people climbing them.
Moira and I tried to make it all the way to the top. We made it to the first little ripple of dunes, then she wanted to slide down it on her butt,
like we had seen in the video at the visitor center. "Ok, but it's harder climbing back up than sliding down." Here she is discovering that for herself.
Wendy and Gwen had wisely turned back (see arrow) (yes, the two tiny dots). We never made it to the top. It was late in the day, I had forgotten
the water bottle, and the wind was really blowing hard and flinging sand all over the place. Plus, walking on sand is harder than she though it
would be. We barely made it past that first little sand ripple before turning back.
Next time we'll be better prepared.
Crossing the Continental Divide. This was not the highest altitude we achieved on the trip. I can't remember if Gwen
is just clowning around, or if she had to go to the bathroom.
Munchies Pizza, Fruita, Colorado. Great burgers. I just wanted to give them a tip of the hat.
We managed to avoid chain restaurants for the most part. I'm sure I don't have to tell any
of you that Fruita is the home of Mike the Headless Chicken.
They had a statue of him on the street, but we didn't get a picture of it.
Wrangler Cafe, Pinedale, Wyoming. Great food here, too. Another tip of the hat.
We were hungry, saw the place, saw that it had several cars parked out front, all with local license plates, which was a good sign.
On to Part 3!
